You need to get the right kind of ultrasound technician training if you want to get properly certified. Most educational courses will usually run between two years (associates degree) to four years (bachelors degree). But in most cases for an ultrasound technician, all you need is an associates degree.

If you do get an associates degree, chances are depending on the state you are in, you won’t have to get a state license. However, registering with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography is highly recommended.

To be eligible to register, you have to pass an exam that covers all of the important skills needed for the job. You need to be very knowledgeable about the sonogram equipment that radiologists use. The equipment that is used takes an x-ray of the soft tissue and all of the organs which help doctors and surgeons to be able to identify the patient’s problem. The ultrasound technician uses a specific equipment called a transducer, which creates a sound wave that gets transformed into a picture.

Even though the training process can be quite demanding, the benefits can really pay off, as you can earn somewhere in the neighborhood of $25 to $30. But most ultrasound technicians that are just starting will roughly make somewhere between $17 to $22. But just like anything else, the more experience you have, the more it will pay off.

As far as training is concerned, it does help to have some kind of science or computer technology at least in your high school year, although it is definitely mandatory. Check to make sure that the ultrasound technician training program is accredited with the leading organizations.

If you can’t afford the training, I’m sure you can find some financial aid to help, by giving you a grant or possibly a loan. Once you pass the training, then you are going to be joining a market that is always looking for more ultrasound technicians. That’s the beauty of the healthcare industry: There is almost always a BIG demand.

The training itself covers subjects such as radiology, physiology, anatomy, patient care, and a whole lot more. It can be very intensive, so don’t sign up for it, if you are not ready to work. You will have a classroom portion as well as the lab portions.

After the coursework is completed that’s when you finally will get some real world experience with an externship at a local hospital.
