Training to be an ultrasound technician can be completed through either colleges or vocational schools. Just make sure they offer an accredited program. It can take from two to four years, depending on whether you want an associate or a bachelor's degree. That isn't a lot of time considering ultrasound technicians, also known as sonographers, can make anywhere from $40,000 to $80,000 a year while helping to save lives. Check with your school of choice to see if they offer financial aid, or if you qualify for grants. Grants are based on your income, so be prepared to answer these questions. If you are under the age of 24, grants are based on your parents' income.

When you call or go into the school you have chosen, ask them how to become an ultrasound technician. They will answer your questions and help you determine if you qualify for their programs. You will be assigned to a guidance counselor who will help you enroll in the classes you need to take and any hands-on training that is necessary for you to learn the skills you are seeking. Typically, the hands-on training is accomplished by having the student train alongside a registered ultrasound technician. When you have completed your training, you will take an exam to determine what you have learned. After you pass your exam, it is recommended that you register with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). It is not required to be registered, but it could help you get the job you're looking for if you have taken the effort to do so.
